RP3’s Journey: Pioneering Connected Rowing with MoveLab

RP3 is a fitness equipment brand specializing in rowing machines used by elite athletes, clubs, and rowing enthusiasts worldwide. When they first approached MoveLab back in 2012, the connected fitness landscape looked completely different.

Faced with the decision to either build a mounted screen or develop an app that could improve over time as tablets and phones evolved, RP3 chose the latter. In 2012, apps were not established, connected fitness was still in its early stages and most devices relied on USB connections. Additionally, mobile hardware and data speeds were limited, making RP3’s decision to go app-first a forward-thinking move.

After exploring feasibility options, they partnered with MoveLab, marking our first introduction into truly connected fitness. With rowing expertise already in our team, we were one step ahead.

The initial need was clear: an app (Android) and a USB connection to the rowing machine. Over time, the scope expanded to include workout uploads and storage, a high-quality racing platform (that is now used at, among others, the NKIR), and even experiments with rowing studio software. We also launched a premium version of the RP3 Portal as a shared business case, and developed a commercial Pro Screen fully powered by MoveLab Connect, including integration with EGYM.

Today, RP3 has evolved from an innovative ergometer into one of the most connected rowing machines in the world, competing at the highest level against industry giants, all while remaining a relatively small but highly innovative company.
